A Cold Fire Within is broken down into six chapters, one of which is allegedly optional. Each chapter/scenario ranges in length from 13 to 32 pages. The action takes place in diverse environments like New York, the Catskill Mountains, as well as in different locations inside the bowels of the Earth. One chapter even takes place in a past time, when beings other than men roamed the earth. Each chapter can be resolved in a maximum of two sessions, even though it is more accurate to say that most chapters will need one long session and a half to complete.The campaign is linear, even though the optional chapter can be explored from a number of locations. Each location contains both sandbox as well as linear elements. As expected in Call of Cthulhu, most chapters are mostly investigative in nature. On the other hand, and owing to the adventure's Pulp Cthulhu roots, there is a very high number of action scenes. The Mythos makes guest star appearances only. The adventure is more about theosophy, parapsychology, hollow Earth, and the rise of fascism in 1930's America, and less about any Great Old One dreaming.
